Bagpipes and Big Dreams: Leeya’s Story

Leeya de Villiers, a Grade 10 student at HCOS, has recently earned first and second place in the British Columbia Piping Association competition, showcasing her dedication to playing the bagpipes.

In her words, “I love playing bagpipes and playing in a pipe band.” The competition, held in Port Coquitlam, became a proud moment for Leeya and her team as they celebrated their hard work and shared success.

Leeya began playing the bagpipes six years ago, inspired by her brothers. Since then, her journey has been filled with hours of practice, commitment, and the joy of mastering her craft. Reflecting on her experience, Leeya shares, “If you work very hard and are dedicated, you can be successful.”

More Time to Shine

“The flexibility of home education gives me lots of time to practice my instrument and travel to Highland games, competitions and piping events.” HCOS is so proud to be a part of providing a balance that has allowed her to focus on her passion while excelling academically.

Looking Ahead

What’s next for Leeya? She plans to continue improving her piping skills and hopes to achieve even greater heights in the future: a Grade 1 piper.
